The SKODA Octavia Pulls in Victory at the Tow Car of the Year Awards

The Octavia has taken victory in the ‘Up to 1,400kg’ category at the Tow Car of the Year Awards, making this the third year in a row an Octavia has won a Tow Car award, following overall victory in 2013. The Octavia which won was the 2.0TDI 150PS SE Business model.

Competition for the Tow Car Awards was rigorous. Judges included editorial staff from Practical Caravan and What Car? magazines and technical experts from The Camping and Caravanning Club. Each car went through a series of towing tests, including acceleration, braking, hill starts and an emergency lane-change test.

Cars aren’t just rated for their towing ability; the What Car? team score each model for regular driving, safety, running costs and value for money. The Camping and Caravanning Club’s technical team check practical details such as boot space, how easily extension mirrors can be fitted, and whether the spare wheel provision is suitable for towing. The aim is to find cars which are great to tow with, but also good value and easy to live with every day.

Speaking on behalf of the panel, David Motton, Tow Car Editor, Practical Caravan, said “The ┼áKODA holds on to its crown as our favourite tow car weighing less than 1,400kg, and does so in some style. As you'd expect of a former overall winner, it tows beautifully. It’s also immensely roomy, with more than enough space for tall adults to travel comfortably in the back.”

Alasdair Stewart, ┼áKODA UK Brand Director, commented: “The Octavia is an exceptionally practical family car with broad appeal. This latest award shows it continues to offer an ideal combination of credentials for towing.”

Volkswagen introduce a new petrol engine to the Golf family!

Volkswagen are introducing a new petrol engine to the Golf family, offering customers even better fuel efficiency and some great specification

As of 9 June, customers are able to order the 1.0 TSI 115PS petrol BlueMotion engine for Golf Hatch, Golf Estate and Golf SV. This frugal engine returns 65.7 mpg on the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of just 99g/km in the Golf Hatch. Also available for the first time with a BlueMotion engine is the option of a DSG automatic gearbox

Golf Hatch Match BlueMotion
  • Current BlueMotion exterior but with Match alloys (16-inch Dover)
  • Current Match interior (but only Cruise Control; not Adaptive CC, and no Driver Profile Select)

Golf Estate SE BlueMotion
  • Current BlueMotion exterior (but with silver roof rails) and SE alloys (16-inch Toronto)
  • Current SE interior (but only Cruise Control; not Adaptive CC, and no Driver Profile Select)

Golf SV SE BlueMotion
  • Current BlueMotion exterior (but with no roof rails) and SE alloys (16-inch Toronto)
  • Current SE interior (but only Cruise Control; not Adaptive CC, and no Driver Profile Select)

Engine and economy

These cars combine the economy benefits of a diesel with the upfront price benefits of a petrol. First deliveries of these cars are due in September.

At the heart of the TSI BlueMotion is a 1.0-litre (999 cc) three-cylinder turbocharged TSI engine from the EA211 series.  This generates 115PS from 5,000 to 5,500rpm, taking the car from 0 to 62mph in 9.7 seconds. Top speed is 127 mph.  At 200Nm, the TSI BlueMotion has the highest specific torque of any large-scale production series of petrol engines. This is available from 2,000 rpm, though 150Nm is already delivered from just 1,500rpm.

The impressive economy of these cars is achieved through a number of aerodynamic measures, as well as substantial engine development.  By lowering the chassis by 15mm, adapting the radiator grille, optimising the cooling airflow and fitting special underfloor panels and a rear spoiler, the Golf TSI BlueMotion’s Cd value (drag) has been reduced to 0.28 (from 0.29 in the standard Golf).  The car also features super low rolling resistance tyres.

The engine incorporates an ultra-rigid crankcase made of lightweight die-cast aluminium. Its compact construction with three cylinders make the 1.0-litre TSI around 15kg lighter than a comparable four-cylinder engine. The exhaust manifold has been fully integrated into the cylinder head and fitted with a cooling jacket to make the best possible use of exhaust gas energy during the warm-up phase and to cool the exhaust gases even more effectively at high loads.

The TSI BlueMotion is also fitted with a toothed belt which, compared to a chain drive, reduces friction by around 30 per cent. The maximum injection pressure of the 1.0-litre TSI is high for a petrol at 250bar, and advanced five-hole solenoid injectors ensure precise fuel injections and faster energy conversion.

The Golf TSI BlueMotion also features:
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • XDS electronic differential lock
  • Seven airbags
  • Automatic Post Collision Braking System
  • PreCrash system
  • Cruise control
  • Start-stop with battery regeneration and driver alert

Note:  ACC and Front Assist are not available.

In the Golf Estate and Golf SV, predicted fuel economy figures are 65.7 mpg and 99g/km (103 for DSG) for the Estate, and 62.8 mpg, 105g/km (61.4/105 for DSG) for the SV.
